French Wine 101 with Patrick Bennett & Chef David Viana (9/24/19)
Tuesday, September 24 @ 6:30pm
Lecture (approx. 2.5 hours)
The idea of tackling France—the accents and the growing regions and the different vintages—can feel like a vast, unmanageable task for anyone who wants to start learning about wine. When someone says “red Burgundy,” what grape are they talking about? And when they say “white Burgundy”, do they mean Chardonnay. Why put the place on the label instead of the name of the grape? How does the terroir effect the end result in the wines we drink. In this class, sommelier and importer Patrick Bennett of Vineyard Brands will bring you up to speed, so the next time you dine out you can order a delicious French bottle with confidence. Chef David Viana will be in house cooking up some delicious snacks to accompany, and of course, contributing to what is sure to be a great conversation!
Patrick Bennett got his start as wine director of Avenue, a French-focused seafood restaurant in Long Branch, New Jersey. He’s worked with renowned restaurateur Drew Neiporent at Corton in New York City, where he developed a French-focused list that complemented Chef Paul Liebrandt’s elevated cuisine. In 2013, Bennett joined the team at Mario Batali’s Babbo, growing his knowledge of Italian wines. In 2015, Bennet joined the Crafted Hospitality team as Beverage Director of Colicchio & Sons, where he created a diverse and approachable wine list with selections at every price point appealing to both aficionados and novice wine drinkers alike. His interest in natural wines is reflected in the list as well.
Bennett has traveled the world, exploring the diversity of wine regions throughout Europe and New Zealand, and enjoys learning the culture and history behind the food and beverage traditions of each.
